From growing public demand to safe clinical governance. Where medical cupping therapy is practised or entering formal complementary healthcare settings, regulatory bodies require more than a training course: they require a coherent system for practitioner eligibility, education, clinical competence, patient safety, infection prevention, consent, documentation, professional accountability and continuing standards. The British Cupping Society (BCS) provides a medically led framework to help authorities develop that system.
Formally established in 2008 following earlier professionalisation work, the BCS is led by medical and healthcare professionals and has focused on the standardisation, regulation, education and research of cupping therapy. Its training is restricted to healthcare professionals, reflecting the Society’s position that medical cupping should be delivered within appropriate clinical competence and accountability.
BCS standards and teaching have been used across ministries of health, universities and higher-education settings. BCS has worked internationally to support safer, more consistent approaches to medical cupping and to provide authorities with a model that can be adapted to local legislation, professional regulation and healthcare systems.
The BCS model links education with competence, professional registration requirements, continuing professional development and a code of conduct, instead of only procedural training as a stand-alone qualification.
BCS standards have been used and taught in engagement with health authorities, universities and higher-education stakeholders across the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Türkiye, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Canada and Malaysia. This international experience enables BCS to contribute to regulatory projects at different stages - from initial scoping and stakeholder consultation through curriculum design, clinical protocols, trainer development, competency assessment and implementation.

BCS offers a collaborative route to developing a defensible, patient-centred framework for medical cupping therapy. The objective is not to replace national regulation, but to provide specialist subject-matter expertise that helps authorities establish clear minimum standards, reduce unsafe or inconsistent practice, distinguish appropriately trained healthcare professionals from unregulated provision, and create an educational pathway that can be monitored, audited and progressively strengthened.
